Our SOTW this week is an excellent scuzz-pop offering from Brighton's Beach Riot. 'Sofa Surfer' serves crunchy riffs, stoccato bass lines and mellow vocals that leave you feeling anything but mellow. It's actually most likely to make you do that thing where everyone gets really low and then all jump up at the same time. Ah gigs, am I right?
Tight vocal harmonies, chaotic stompers from the rhythm section, it's everything we've come to love Beach Riot for. And the single will become part of their first full release since 2018, a debut album! Subatomic Party Cool is out this Summer on the lovely Alcopop! Records. Stoked.
The band said; “‘Sofa Surfer’ is about fallen angels, time and space, fact and fiction, the difference between perceived good and perceived bad, and it challenges them all - Icarus as a woman, the devil being the way he is because he was ejected from heaven for being too punk. That kinda thing, you know, just your typical pop song really.”
And in the most Brighton band move of all time, Beach Riot have also launched an exclusive competition for fans to win a one-of-a-kind deluxe Sofa Surfer bundle featuring a custom Beach Riot surfboard, a pair of VANS authentics, a drop of the band’s own Blush beer, plus Beach Riot vinyl and merch.
