Maybe there's not a lot more than pop sensibilities here, but something in the melody and little guitar flourishes makes 'Stare' very more-ish. It also features a funky bass line that hints a little bit more genre-hopping than a first listen might suggest. The band themselves have said that the 'indie R&B' pigeon hole only covers a fraction of the influences that they bring into their music, but I love that stamp. It's brought amazing things into the world in the past year or two and long may it continue.
Mana Island are also a little bit of history repeating itself, as they are one of several interesting bands coming out of Russia at the moment (look up Roundelay and The Jack Wood); wherever there is political or sociological bullsh*t going on, the musicians' community react to it, directly or indirectly.
Having supported FOALS on the Russian leg of their tour, we foresee these guys becoming a strong export.
